Self Program A 2013 Chevy Key Fob
I know there is a special slot in the console that is used for programming, but I don't recall if it an actual keyed slot as opposed to just a simple receiver. If it's the latter, then I would guess that you wouldn't have to have the key cut. Granted, if the fob comes from a dealer, what's the likelyhood that it wouldn't be cut in the first place? As far as I'm aware, they have to have the VIN and confirmation of ownership(?) before they can provide a key in the first place. Otherwise, it would be very easy to duplicate someone else's key. Suddenly GTA becomes real life.

Not really in the market for a Cheval Surge. The process is in your owners manual in the Keys, Doors and Windows Section 2 and requires at least 1 already functioning transmitter/remote/FOB (TWO in Canada) It does not need to be 'cut' as the slot in the storage compartment is not 'keyed'. WOT Programming with a Recognized Transmitter Available A new transmitter can be programmed to the vehicle when there is one recognized transmitter. For vehicles sold in Canada, two recognized transmitters are required to program a new transmitter. To program, the vehicle must be off and all of the transmitters, both currently recognized and new, must be in the vehicle. Place the recognized transmitter(s) in the cup-holder.
Insert the vehicle key of the new transmitter into the key lock cylinder on the outside of the driver door and turn the key to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. The Driver Information Center (DIC) displays READY FOR REMOTE #2, 3, 4 OR 5. Remove the rubber mat in the instrument panel storage. Extend the key blade on the new transmitter and insert the key blade into the transmitter slot. Press and hold the POWER button on the center stack for two seconds. When the transmitter is programmed, the DIC will show that it is ready to program the next transmitter.
Remove the transmitter from the transmitter slot and press UNLOCK on the transmitter. To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 3 through 5. When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the POWER button for 10 seconds to exit programming mode. I'm curious if someone can tell me the answer to this. I want to buy another key fob, but not pay to have it cut.just keeping the costs low.
A super hindi 10 fonts. Can I program and use that key FOB without cutting it? I know you have to stick it in the thing on the top of the dash to program it, but does it need to be cut to do that? Getting a new key FOB that is cut will cost a lot more than an uncut one. Thanks for anyone who can answer that definitively. Check your manual. In the 2013 manual it is on pages 2-5 thru 2-7.
You can program an extra fob. Getting the metal key cut is an extra charge. The hole in the dash is just a place to put the fob so that it is in an exact position for the car to see it, so it does not matter if the key is cut or not. Thanks folks, that's what I was assuming. I put my key in that slot and it didn't feel keyed to a specific key. That means it's not nearly as expensive to have a 'spare', as long as you're willing to accept that it won't start the car with a dead battery in the FOB.
The other thing it does is make it easier for me to perhaps make my own remote interface. I know I've seen the script that someone has that can do remote start on schedule, and I'm looking to do something like that also, but I wanted to do it a little differently.
I want to take an arduino set with ethernet and hook it to a key FOB and program the system to do all the key FOB functions via network. I've had too many times when the onstar app on my phone either took forever to do the job, or failed.
I want to script a warmup time for my daily departure, and also make all the functions available by network. I did the same thing with my garage doors, so that I can open them via iphone. I'm a geek by trade, so it was fun to do and wasn't too expensive. Having all those functions available via network will make it faster and more convenient.and as long as I don't have to have a key cut, the FOB won't cost too much. That means it's not nearly as expensive to have a 'spare', as long as you're willing to accept that it won't start the car with a dead battery in the FOB. Your properly programmed 'uncut' remote will start the car fine even with a dead FOB battery.(when placed in that slot which merely puts it in dorect proximity with the transceiver antenna) Really the only functionality you will lack is the ability to unlock the car with a dead 12V battery, as nothing else on the car is mechanically key-coded. But having the key mechanically coded/cut to match your car is not really a significant expense, and many dealers have the equipment cut the key, so there really is little to no incentive for leaving it uncut.

Two in Canada? So, I lose a fob, only have one left and because I need two to program that means I cannot program it? Only in Canada Eh! Maybe I should by a third one now and program it before I lose it. Also, I wonder if I drive across the border if I can do it with just one as I am no longer in Canada (LOL).

Maybe I should by a third one now and program it before I lose it. Also, I wonder if I drive across the border if I can do it with just one as I am no longer in Canada (LOL) That is correct. On Canadian cars if you lose 1 FOB you will have to visit your dealer to have another programmed via GDS2. It apparently has something to with Canadian insurance coverages for vehicle theft, many of which are provincially mandated and operated/governed by the provinces. So this is the case for ALL vehicles in Canada not just the Volt.

I bought a used FOB and new key blank on eBay.
Got the key cut for $15 at a local locksmith even though I knew it wasn't critical for programming (I am going to carry it in my wallet). But I couldn't get the fob to program. I got to step 4 but never got acknowledgement about it being programmed. I know the battery is good so I began to wonder if the fob is bad. But then someone in another post (How many fobs did you get with your volt) said these instructions are not completely correct.
I asked him to elaborate. When I get to step 4 and press the 'On' button (used to start the car) for 2 seconds, it keeps blinking and never says anything about it being programmed.
I did wait 2 seconds, then pulled it out, pressed the FOB unlock button then pressed the On button for 10 seconds. The old FOBs worked, the new used one didn't. Since there is no light to make sure the fob is transmitting I don't know if I got a dud.
Anyone have any ideas of what else to try? I lost one of my volt keys and bought an uncut replacement online. I followed the above instructions and instructions in the manual but couldn't get passed the second one where you insert the key into the door and unlock 5x. I couldn't insert the key into the door because it was uncut. Does anyone have a work around for this or do I just go to the dealer and pay another $150 to have the key programmed? I have not tried to program a new fob but, I think you can use the old key for step 2.
It should not matter which key is used in the drivers door because all that does is get the DIC to display 'Ready for Remote #?' I lost one of my volt keys and bought an uncut replacement online. I found out that you cannot use a 'used' Fob on the Volt with the above procedure. It needs to be new, never programmed.
And the key does not have to be cut on the Fob you want to program but you do need to insert a cut-for-that-car key in the door in order to start the process (e.g. Your other Fob key). This is what I did and the new Fob ($55 through my Chevy Parts Dept) works fine (I didn't have the key cut - only wanted another working Fob). You MIGHT be able to take a USED Fob to the dealer and they can do their magic with the GM Tech 2 programmer but I am guessing that cost will be more than just buying a new, clean, unused Fob.
Sorry for the bad news. Frank Michigan. I just checked gm parts direct and that p/n 22923862 is listed for the '13. Uncut, uncoded and listed for 34.02. The keys I have for my '13 are listed for the '14, 'coded' whatever that exactly means, and does include the remote charge door button. One of my keys is original and new from the dealership when I purchased used.
They had to replace the key under GMPP for some reason and thats what they gave me, so I ordered a second with the same p/n. Not sure I fully understand but let me clarify some points. First, you do not need a coded 'key' - the key has nothing to do with starting the car; it is there to open the door in case your fob does not work/battery is dead. More importantly, the key is also used to start the 'new fob programming' sequence (although I am sure that the dealer can use their GM Tech 2 to also put it in learn mode, but I am sure that would cost you money).
So, you will always want to have at least one cut key (but I would spend the few bucks to get a second one cut as well and put that in a safe place). As for the part number and 2013 vs 2014 differences, if they say the 'new' part number has the charger door button, that is fine. When you buy the fob, you will get a key blank as well, along with the battery.
The procedure to have your car 'learn' the new fob is in the owners manual and very easy to do. The hardest part in my mind was removing the cover on the door handle to insert the key (I was afraid of scratching the paint or cracking the plastic - it is on very tight). Hi all, I ran into a problem with key programming and thought I'd ask the experts. I know I've seen posts by WOT that have been real helpful and perhaps he's still watching here? My 2014 volt got totalled by an inattentive cell phone player-wither. 3 weeks prior I bought my wife a 2014 volt like mine. I had 3 keys for mine.
I gave one of them up when they totalled the car. I bought a 3rd for hers when we bought the car. When I went to add the 3rd key to hers for programming, it accepted it fine. It was brand new never used. It went in as Key #4. I then tried to add my 2 previously used-on-the-other-volt keys, but it did not accept either as key number 5.
I do see that there is a procedure I can use to un-learn all keys. It's a 30 minute procedure that involves some specific steps.
WOT has written about this on another thread and I've seen the info on the Chevy SS forum as well. I'm not sure if this is what I'm looking for. I want to try to get all 5 keys operating my existing Volt. I understand that the car learns the remote, but does the remote learn or get locked to a specific car? Will it be impossible for me to use my old remotes that were previously keyed to my other car?
Program Key Fob Chevy
If there is a wipe procedure or something I'd like to do that. We juggle cars a bit these days and today I accidentally left someone without a key.if I could get them all programmed we'd be all set.
