Currently, if you want a 3D model of a real-world object you can either download it from one of the many stock object websites out there or create it yourself. In both cases someone had to originally create the model which combines using a 3D modeling package like Maya with a number of images of the object that can then be wrapped on to the model to make it look like the original.

It’s a time consuming process that needs one or two skilled individuals to construct properly. Qi Pan, 3rd Year PhD student at Cambridge University, along with Gerhard Reitmayr and Tom Drummond, have released the first details of a possible replacement for that system called ProFORMA. The name stands for Probabilistic Feature-based On-line Rapid Model Acquisition and allows anyone with a webcam to capture a real-world object as a 3D model with the textures already attached. You don’t need any skilled artists or modelers, just a webcam and the ProFORMA software.

An overview of 3d printers. This could make things a bit less difficult to find the most ideal tool for the job. Or gather ideas to create a new, even better 3D printer. Never mind that silly name: ProFORMA (which stands for 'Probabilistic Feature-based On-line Rapid Model Acquisition', if you must know) is some cool system.

As the video above demonstrates the user just needs to position the object they want captured in front of a webcam. Then the object is rotated and more information captured by the ProFORMA software. Eventually you end up with a very accurate, fully-textured 3D model of the desired object.

Proforma

ProFORMA has already started winning awards such as the Best Demo Prize at augmented reality conference. It isn’t available to use publicly yet, but a post on states that some library updates are currently being carried out and that in a few months time: A Linux-based demo of ProFORMA should be released. This will be followed by a windows based demo.

There is always going to be a need for 3D modeling packages, but if such a system could be bypassed in certain circumstances it could lead to major cost savings and new functionality for end users. For example, video games are a very good example of how ProFORMA could be used to enhance a game.

From the developers point of view ProFORMA could be a very quick way of getting specific low-quality objects into the game. But once the title has shipped the developer may also allow the gamer to create their own levels and if ProFORMA was available why not allow them to add their own models too? There have been a few games in the past that have tried to personalize a game by allowing you to use your own likeness. With ProFORMA you no longer need to upload profile shots of yourself and have them converted. Instead just get a friend to rotate a webcam around your head and import that into the game.
