Multicast Traffic Generator Windows 7
I am looking for a good simple tool that runs on a standard OS (Windows or Linux) that I can used to test that multicast is being passed properly by a router. I have been asked by a client to enable multicast routing on a Linux box acting as their router since their to for a few features. Since I am not physically near the client I don't really have the ability to experiment with the various methods for setting up multicast routing on Linux. I can setup a router at my desk that is identical to what is deployed on their network, but I don't know of any good simple tools that I can use to generate or listen for multicast traffic. The one mulicast tool I have found is which is part of the Windows 2000/2003 resource kit.
Nping is an open source tool for network packet generation, response analysis and response time measurement. It is free and open source and runs on Linux, *BSD, Windows and Mac OS X.
From what I have read online it seems that mcast.exe does not work across a router, and only works on the local network, so that doesn't seem to be useful for me to test multicast routing. So what do tool(s) do you use to test that multicast routing is properly setup?

Iperf is perfect for this and it's readily available for most linux distributions and windows. We have an established piece of software that uses IGMP UDP multicast messages to establish direct TCP communication. The software joins the multicast group using the address 224.100.0.1, then simultaneously sends UDP multicast messages while listening for UDP multicast messages from other copies of the same software running on other machines on the local network. The messages contain information then used for establishing direct TCP connections for further communication. This software has been running successfully for many years now on Windows XP machines.
We are in the progress of upgrading these machines to Windows 7, resulting in locations with mixed Windows 7 and XP machines on the same network, and have encountered a frustrating issue. Sometimes the Windows 7 machine will mysteriously refuse to send the multicast messages.
The software is running fine on Windows 7, but the UDP multicast messages are not even reaching the router, much less any other machines on the network. There is only one network interface on the Windows 7 machine, so it's not the known issue of Windows 7 multicast getting confused about which interface to broadcast on. The firewall is turned off, and the network adapter itself is set to allow broadcast messages through. What else could be blocking/misdirecting the multicast messages? This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. I'm not entirely familiar with all the intricacies of using WireShark, so if you have any good ideas on some filters to use, please let me know. From what I can tell from the captures I've done so far, there doesn't seem to be any IGMP traffic on the Windows 7 machine - yet I know there must be, as I can verify that our software is seeing the UDP multicast messages that it itself is sending. Filtering via the destination 224.100.0.1 shows only packets from the other computer, the one still running XP, so those packets are arriving - yet our software on the Windows 7 machine does not receive them. It's almost as if our software is joining and participating in a multicast group on a completely different network interface, yet there's only one interface it could be using. Even WireShark only shows the one interface it can be monitoring.
