Anyone had any luck gettign VB6 to install under Windows 8? I just tried to install the Enterprise Edition VB6 on Windows 8 Enterprise. Got a few compatibilty messages then it appeared to hang for a while but then went through the install process right up to the end where it stopped responding.

I am trying to install VB6 on a Window 8.1, 64 bit PC. When the installer setup is first run it says that there are compatibility problems, but I've seen this before with Windows 7 and the installation has completed successfully. The problem I'm having this time is at the very end of the installation; it hangs with a window saying 'Setup is updating your system.'

After a period of time (10-15 minutes) the Title-bar displays '(Not Responding)'; this does not change even if I wait another 15 minutes. After terminating the setup I find that I can indeed run VB6 and examine or edit my legacy programs; however the help-files can not be found. Further, VB6 (or Visual Studio) is not listed as an installed program. I suspect the proper Registry entries have not been made, which is why VB6 can't find the help-files. I've tried the installation using the Compatibility Troubleshooter, the first attempt was compatibility with Windows XP; same result hung at 'Setup updating your system.' Attempts at other compatibility setting (e.g.

Runtime

Windows 7) fail as they try to install outdated service packs and won't proceed beyond that point. Can anyone provide suggestions as to how to get VB6 to install on Windows 8.1.

Note: As I have a lot of legacy software in VB6, therefore conversion to newer versions is not feasible. I followed the steps listed in the 'blog post' and it was only partially successful; through step 4. When I downloaded the 'service pack' at the provided link and tried to run it I got the following error message: 'In order to install Cumulative update for Microsoft Visual Basic 6 SP6 (KB2708437), you must have Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 SP6 product installed'. I searched and found two references to SP6: I tried to run both and both of them failed with an error stating that there was either insufficient disk space (nonsense 500G available), or cabinet file is corrupted (both corrupted????).

Any suggestions as to how to proceed? BTW: The help files were missing only because I failed to install the MSDN; it's now installed and I have help files. VB6 does run, but I don't know the consequences of an installation without data-access-components; however, my previously installation attempts were 'Typical' installation so perhaps the data-access-components are available? Note: All installations and attempts were done as Administrator. Hi, According to Microsoft Support Lifecycle, Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 is out of support. I suggest you install the latest compiler for the best performance.

If you have any issue of installing the supported compiler, please feel free to paste here. Best regards, We are trying to better understand customer views on social support experience, so your participation in this interview project would be greatly appreciated if you have time.

@xytsrm2 Based on some info from Chuck's post, we can see VB6 runtime is supported on Win 8. But that page haven't clarified Windows 8.1. You can see others have the same issue under this link: It is not so good in Windows 8.1 OS. As VB6.0 IDE is not official stated as a supported product on Windows 8.1, I would recommend you either use it on another kind of OS or raise your VS version.

That would be better. I'll just mark Chuck's post as the answer.
